Video: Wild Wednesday: World Champion Squirrel Cook Off

Wed, 2014-08-13 07:09
The 2014 World Champion Squirrel Cook Off is taking place in Bentonville, AR on the downtown Bentonville square, on September 13th. The World Champion Squirrel Cook Off captures the spirit of this new trend and synthesizes aspects of the competitive food circuits such as the massively popular BBQ Competitions. With the firm Ozark tradition of not only hunting, but eating wild game, specifically squirrel, combined with the culinary renaissance that is blossoming in the hunting world, the stage is set in Arkansas to develop a cooking competition that will draw both competitors and attendees from far and wide. The novelty of cooking and eating Squirrels is enough to attract mainstream national media attention while the tradition of wild game eating is enough to attract hunters. Where hunters go, the hunting industry follows. Additionally there are the aspects of interest from trained chefs and the industry and "foodie" tourism that inherently follows. In the past years the World Champion Squirrel Cook Off (WCSCO) has grown in size and popularity. With teams from around the nation competing to Bentonville to see who can create the finest squirrel dish in the world. Teams from Maryland, Ohio, Arizona, California, Texas and at least 10 other states have faced the judges. Money raised by the event is donated to charity. The rules state that all teams must prepare their entrées onsite; no off site prep is allowed. Teams (3 people) have only 2 ½ hrs. to create their dish. This dish will be judged by a panel of true squirrel eaters, folks who know what good food should taste like.
